In India, 3–4 children out of every 1000 live births are born deaf, and many more develop hearing loss due to neonatal infections. Deaf children in India are increasing every day, and only a small percentage manage to receive cochlear implant surgery on time. The primary challenge is the lack of awareness about the availability of hearing loss treatment, and the high cost — around INR 8 lakh for implant, surgery, and post-surgery habilitation — making it unaffordable for many families.
